Parents for the Weekend

    This past weekend was so much fun.  Me and Matt drove out to Texas, to my sister Devon's house, to keep her 3 kids for the weekend while her and her husband spent the weekend in Austin at a marriage conference.  They have a 3 1/2 year old (Isaac) and twin 2 1/2 year olds (Jackson and Leah) that keep them busy and on their toes, so it was much needed time off.   
     We got to Devon's house around 1:45 Friday afternoon and got to hang out with her a little bit while the kids were napping.  The drive wasn't too bad, we really didn't hit much traffic, which is pretty unusual, especially driving through Houston.  The kids woke up around four and were so excited to see us, especially their Uncle Matt.  We didn't see Jon for long, they had to leave pretty much a soon as he got home from work.

     We spent the afternoon playing outside and building puzzles, then after dinner we took the kids to the playground and splash pad that is close by.  The kids had so much fun playing in the water and building sand castles and when we went to leave we realized we forgot to bring towels.  You can tell we are amateurs, but  luckily it was a short drive home.
     Saturday morning started out early (so I could get done before the kids had been up for too long) with an easy 1.25 hour bike ride followed by a moderate 1 hour run.  The roads around here aren't the best for riding, but I found a long country road that is decent, but there are some pretty good places to run.  When I was done, we decided to split up the troops, Matt took Isaac to Lowe's for one of those kid's clinics where he got to build a putt-putt game and then to McDonald's for lunch.  I took the twins to the mall where, of course, I realized I hadn't brought any strollers, so we didn't walk around too much.  they spent most of the time playing on the little rides they have and in the play area.  Then, after naps, we headed over to my aunt Pam's house for her birthday cookout.  They have a pool and the kids loved it, they were either eating or swimming.  My uncle Chuck made some great steaks and it was fun getting to see them and my cousins.

     On Sunday morning, we got the kids up a little early and made the hour trip to Austin to meet up with my sister Lindsey, her husband Matt and their 1 1/2 year old son Eli.  We met them at this huge park called Zilker Park.  It was really a cool place with a nice playground, a train that you could ride, and a really big spring fed rock pool.  Unfortunately we didn't have a lot of time to spend there, but the kids got to play on the big playground and we took a walk on one of the trails. 

      We left there around 11:30 to find a mall to eat lunch.  Devon and Jon called us on our way there, they were done with their conference, and they met us there.  We did pretty good this trip, the only thing we forgot was bibs for the twins (we left them in the car).  Unfortunately, Matt had to fly home Sunday afternoon, so Jon took him to the airport and they actually got to hang out for awhile before his plane left.  Me and Devon took the kids home, they were exhausted.  Around four o'clock I went for a pretty tough ride and boy was it hot.  I think it may be worse here than in Pensacola, if that's possible.


      We had more fun this weekend than we've had in a long time and the kids were great.  I think we were probably more exhausted after this weekend than we've been in a long time too.  We got a little taste of parenting and realized we definitely have a few things to learn and I think we have more appreciation for what it takes, especially for moms who are home all day by themselves.

      I'll be here for two more weeks, until the 27th.  My mom is going to fly down that weekend, I'm doing a race over near San Antonio, where Lindsey lives, and then we'll drive back.  Like I said, the roads aren't the best for riding around here, but I'll make do.  I'm also going to be able to go ride with my aunt Pam and her daughter later this week.  They have a killer hills course that they are going to take me on.  There are several good routes to run and a nice pool that's only about 10 minutes away, so I'll have no problem getting my training in.  The hardest part will be scheduling it around play dates, doctor appointments, and nap time

Change of Plans

           As those of you who have been following me for awhile know, I have been planning to compete in the USA Triathlon World Championship race in Beijing, China in September.  However, as things often do, my plans have changed.  I recently competed in the St Anthony's Triathlon and ended up qualifying for the Hy Vee championship race in Des Moines, IA.  The Hy Vee championship is supposed to be one of the most competitive age group races in the US if not the world.  When I found out I qualified, I was really excited, but at the same time anxious because I knew I couldn't do it and race in Beijing (the races are only a week apart).  So, after much thought, discussion, and prayer, I have decided to choose the Hy Vee Championship race. 
        There were several factors that went into my decision.  First of all racing in Iowa versus racing in China will be much cheaper and much simpler logistically.  Secondly, because it is alot cheaper I will also be able to travel up to Vermont to compete at the Age Group Nationals race to try to earn a spot at next year's world championship.  It wasn't an easy to decision to give up the chance to be part of Team USA and the incredible experience that would have been, but I feel like I'm taking the path that God wants me to and I'm excited to see where it leads.

CAF camp

    I had an awesome opportunity this past weekend to help out with a triathlon camp that was being put on by the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF).  CAF does a few camps every year and my coaches at Multisport Performance were  asked to host the east coast camp.  I had been looking forward to it for awhile and it did not disappoint.  CAF is a foundation that works with parathletes, which are athletes who have some kind of physical disability, whether it be some type of amputation, paralysis, vision impairment, etc.  They host camps and clinics for the athletes, provide grants for them to be able to get equipment such as a bike, provide grants that pay for the athletes to attend the clinics, among a host of other services.    
    The camp was held at the Portifino Island Resort which is a beautiful facility, right on the water and  perfect for this type of event.  There were about 25 athletes from all over that participted, 6 or 7 coaches that flew in from around the country, and a few mentor athletes that attended.  The athletes were split up into three groups based on their disability.  One group consisted of the below the knee amputees and arm amputees, one group included the folks in a wheelchair, and the last group was the above the knee amputees. 
      Friday was more of a technical day with three different sessions.  In one session, the athletes had a gait analysis done where their running gait was analyzed by one of the top triathlon coaches to see if there was any room for improvement in their technique or efficiency.  In another session, the athletes were properly fit onto their bikes and taught the difference between the geometry of a road and triathlon bike.  The third session was done in the pool.  Each athlete was given a videotaped analysis of their stroke and went through about an hour of drills and coaching.

     Saturday was a day to put to practice what they had learned the day before.  First thing in the morning, we did an open water swim in the bay.  Some of the athletes had never even been in open water before, but everyone seemed to enjoy the experience.  After swimming, we took them over to the track for drills and a short workout.  The athletes were glad to get a break after that session for lunch.  It was pretty hot and they had worked hard.  The last thing we did that afternoon was go for a bike ride.  We rode about 30 miles and the scenery was beautiful, the water was crystal clear.  We couldn't have planned better weather for the camp. 
     I was so inspired by the athletes that attended this camp.  I think the funnest part for me was just being able to hang out with them and getting to know them.  Hearing some of the their stories and the things that they have endured really put some things into perspective for me.  I can't think of much to complain about after being around these guys.  These people hve been through  and overcome more than I can even imagine and yet they have incredible attitudes. 






     There were a couple of mentor athletes there who I also spent some time with.  These were world class parathletes who had competed in the paralympics and numerous world championships.  Just to hear them talk about the races and various competitions that they have competed in as a parathlete was breathtaking.  They don't make any excuses, train just as hard as anyone else, and have accomplished incredible things.

St Anthony's Triathlon

   This weekend I was able to travel down to St Petersburg, FL and compete at the St Anthony's Triathlon, one of the premier Olympic distance races in the US.  It consists of a 1.5k swim (.94 mi), 40k bike (24.8 mi), and 10k run (6.2mi).  It is a regional championship race that boasts of strong competition and a ton of participants, this year there were 4000.  It is also part of a series of races called the 5150 series which offers  more prize money for professionals than any other races.  Yesterday the top pros earned $10,000 each, not bad for less than 2 hours of work :-).
    Me and Matt left on Saturday morning to make the 7 1/2 hour drive down to St Pete and arrived there around 4:30pm.  We went straight to packet pick-up and then to check my bike into transition.  Alot of the bigger races they make you check in your bike the night before.  I kind of like it because I don't have to worry about toting it around with me all evening.  Once my bike was checked in we visited the fairly large expo that was going on, then went to find something to eat.  After dinner, we drove the bike course so I could get an idea of what it was like as I had never done the race before.  After this race and my experience at Bold Eagle, I have realized how important it is to be familiar with the course prior to the race.
     Sunday morning, we got up around 5:20, I had my usual pre-race breakfast, and we headed over to the race venue.  You could feel the excitement in the air as 4000 people were busy setting up their transition areas and getting ready to race.

     When I got to transition, I heard an announcement that the swim had been shortened from 1500m to 1000m because of the strong wind that was stirring up the water.  They decided to actually move the location of the swim away from the pier and seawall.  I wasn't too upset, I was just glad to hear that they didn't cancel the swim altogether. 
    Once my transition was setup, I headed over to the swim start.  I was in the seventh wave of the morning, so didn't have to wait too long to start which was nice, the last wave didn't get to start until two hours after me.  I got to watch the pros start which was pretty cool.  There was a field of about 70 top tier pros including some of our former Olympians and 2012 Olympic hopefuls..

         We had a beach start for the swim, which means we ran into the water from the sand.  This was one of the roughest swims I've ever done.  Mostly because the crowd never really seemed to thin out so it was hard to get into a rhythm.  Typically it'll be rough, with people hitting, kicking, running into you for the first 200 yards or so and then clear up, but this time it was like that the majority of the way.  Due to the change in the swim location, once we got out of the water we had about a 1/3 mile run up to the transition area.

      The bike course was pancake flat, but it was pretty windy which slowed us down a little.  There was one part of the course that I was definitely grateful that I had seen the day before.  We went through a neighborhood on a golf course that had several very large speed bumps and I saw at least three accidents that occurred because of them. Probably people with their head down, not expecting them.  One looked really bad, there was a lady sprawled out on the road, not moving much, with a puddle of blood by her face (there was an ambulance there).  
        Once onto the run, it was getting pretty hot and there wasn't much shade on the course.  My legs felt pretty good though, and I wanted to leave it all out on the course, not hold anything back.  One of my mantras throughout the race was "don't wait," as in don't wait until later to push hard.  It paid off and I actually ended up running a personal best for the 10k, 41:06, which was the 10th fastest run split for the women (not including the pros).

         I ended up finishing 5/104 in my age group and 45/994 women overall.  I was pretty happy with that as my goal had been to be in the top ten of my age group.  I also ended up qualifying for the championship race of the 5150 series which is supposed to be the most competitive race in the US, if not in the world.  The only drawback, is that it's the weekend before Beijing and it wouldn't be possible to do both.  I have two weeks to make a decision, so I will be doing alot of praying over the next few days.  Feel free to throw any advice my way :-)  Overall, this was a well worthwhile experience.  I have wanted to do this race for a long time and it didn't disappoint, going above and beyond my expectations of how a race should be run.

Easter weekend

     I had a great Easter weekend as I hope all of you did.  Not only was it special because I got to celebrate Jesus's death and resurrection, but I got to spend it with some of my favorite people.  The only thing that could have been better would have been if Matt could have been with me. 
     Early Friday morning, me and my mom set out to drive to Texas.  My sister and her husband bought my grandma's car, so we were delivering it.  We left around 5:30 in the morning and got to Temple at 5 in the evening.  It was a great trip, went by pretty quickly and we didn't run into any traffic.  Lindsey had driven over from San Antonio with Eli and I was so excited to see them and all of Devon's kids.

   On Saturday morning, we were invited over to one of Devon's friends' house for a brunch and Easter egg hunt.  The food was good and the kids had a great time.  Isaac definitely won the prize for the most eggs, you could tell he was an experienced egg hunter.  While the other kids would find an egg, open it to see what was inside, and then move on to looking for the next one, Isaac was running around as fast as he could filling up his bucket with any eggs he could find.  By the end of the party, Isaac was complaining that his tummy hurt because he ate too much candy :-)

     That afternoon, me and Devon drove into Austin to visit a few of the triathlon shops I had heard of and to get some time to just hang out.  We did a little shopping and went out for dinner.  It was nice to be able to hang out and chat without a little one vying for our attention.

     Sunday morning the kids were excited to find their Easter baskets that mommy and daddy had made them and of course, we all went to church.  That evening we all went over to my Aunt Pam's house for dinner.  They had grilled ribs which were really good.  It was good to see and catch up with them. 
      Unfortunately I had to get back to the real world, and me and mom flew home yesterday (monday).  We were supposed to have a pretty crazy schedule where we were flying to Memphis, then Milwaukee, then Atlanta, and finally to Pensacola, but after sitting on the plane for 1 1/2 hours before even taking off from Austin, we missed our flight to Milwaukee.  Which actually ended up being a blessing.  We were able to get put on a flight that was leaving Memphis and going straight to Pensacola.  We had about 3 1/2 hours to kill in the airport, but it wasn't too bad.

Bold Eagle Triathlon

I competed in the Bold Eagle triathlon in Navarre, FL yesterday.  It wasn't one that I was planning on doing.  It was a last minute decision, I figured I may as well do it since it was close and I figured it would be a fun longer training day.  The race was a disaster though.  I hadn't heard great things about the race directors, but I had done the same race last year and it wasn't too bad.  However, this year they tried doing a half-ironman race at the same time as the olympic and it was an epic failure. 
      The people putting on the race decided they didn't want to create two swim courses so they had everyone do the half-iron distance (1.2 miles) which was okay because they at least let us know that beforehand.  The swim was in the bay and we basically just did an out and back course.  The water was pretty calm, but I was dreading getting in because a cold front came in overnight and I was freezing.  Once I got in it wasn't too bad though.

     Getting on the bike was a different story.  Being wet and having the temperature around 55-60 made for a pretty chilly bike ride.  It took me about two-thirds of the ride to warm up.  The bike course was the disaster of the race.  It was way more complicated than it needed to be, there were too many loops and turns, and it was very poorly marked leading to mass confusion about where to go.  About five miles into the ride, as I was riding past a side street one of the volunteers told me I was supposed to turn.  I tried to quickly turn around and ended up crashing my bike...not cool.  Luckily I wasn't going too fast so it wasn't bad, but I ended up with a pretty bloody knee, a swollen and bruised jammed finger, and I had to stop and put my chain back on.  Needless to say, I rode pretty cautiously after that.



      The run went good, it was a pretty simple course, but by then I was so frustrated with the race that I wasn't very motivated.  I did okay, but it wasn't one of my better runs.

     After the race, everyone was pretty upset about the confusion on the bike course.  There were people who had gone all different distances ranging from 17-26 miles (it was supposed to be 25) depending on which loops they did and how many times they did them.  i was just glad to get out of it without any significant injuries or anything.  It was still a pretty good training day, but not a race I'll be doing again.

TGIF...I'm so ready for the weekend! It's been a good week, but I'm looking forward to the next couple of days.  Tomorrow my church is having a women's conference and I get to lead worship for it.  I've never played in front of a group without any other instruments, so we'll see how it goes.  All I want is to play well enough that I am not a distraction to those worshipping.  My mom is one of the keynote speakers and I'm excited about hearing her testimony.  Then on Sunday, I'm doing another race, the Bold Eagle Triathlon in Navarre.  I decided to do it last minute, just signed up two days ago, and am really just using it as a longer training session. 
     On Wednesday, we had a nice surprise, Lindsey (my sister), her husband, and friends stopped by for dinner.  They were on their way home from their vacation in St Augustine and went a little out of their way so they could come see us.  I made homemade pizza at my parent's house, we ate, hung out, and played a game.  It was so good to see them, even though they didn't have my nephew Eli with them.
     I had some tough training sessions this week.  A few of the ones that stick out in my mind were a ten mile run that I did on Thursday where for the middle 40 minutes I was alternating between 1 min max effort and 1 min easy.  My legs were dead by the end.  Another good one was this morning I rode 50 miles including some tough intervals and followed up by a short run.  I also got to meet Coach John on Thursday afternoon for an open water swim session.  As you can tell, I definately won't be tapered for the race this weekend :-)
